Tampa Electric is alerting customers to a rise in sophisticated scams targeting utility customers — including fraudsters using artificial intelligence, fake websites, and threats of immediate service shutoffs to steal money.

Scammers are posing as TECO employees through calls, texts, emails, and even in-person visits to customers’ homes. Spokesperson Cherie Jacobs said the problem has gotten significantly worse in recent years. “Since 2024, we have seen a significant increase in the number of customers who’ve reported hearing from scammers or falling for scams,” she said.

With temperatures rising and electricity use climbing, TECO says scammers are exploiting the routine nature of monthly utility bills. Many scams rely on fear and urgency, threatening immediate shutoffs unless customers send money quickly — often via gift cards, cryptocurrency, or other unconventional methods.

Some scammers have gone a step further, building fake websites designed to closely mimic Tampa Electric’s official site. “Instead of logging into the Tampa Electric site, they’re getting an imposter site that looks just like ours,” Jacobs said. “Similar colors, similar logo, yet there’s something not quite right about it.”

Jacobs stressed that the real Tampa Electric will never pressure customers over the phone. “We will never call you and demand immediate payment,” she said. “We will never demand a credit card or debit card.”

According to the Better Business Bureau, victims lose an average of around $435 to utility scams. Seniors and customers already behind on their bills are considered the most vulnerable targets.

TECO reminds customers that all employees and contractors must carry identification badges. “Ask to see their badge,” Jacobs said. “If you’re still not comfortable, call Tampa Electric.”

Customers who believe they’ve been targeted can report scams at tampaelectric.com/scam. Those who have lost money should contact the Tampa Police Department.
