Tampa Electric customers will see a reduction in their monthly bills sooner than expected, the company announced Tuesday.
Tampa Electric, known as TECO, said it will remove a storm-related surcharge from customer bills beginning Aug. 1 — one month earlier than originally planned.
The change amounts to a savings of roughly $20 per 1,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity used.
The surcharge was approved by the Florida Public Service Commission in March 2025 to help TECO recover more than $400 million in costs tied to power restoration following the record-breaking 2024 hurricane season. The fee was spread across 18 months to soften the financial impact on customers. The company said those costs will be fully recovered ahead of schedule, allowing it to end the charge early.
“We understand everyone is feeling the pressure of higher prices, from the grocery store to the gas pump, and we heard you,” said Archie Collins, president and CEO of Tampa Electric. “It’s important to us that you receive this benefit as soon as possible.”
Customers enrolled in TECO’s Budget Billing program will see the change reflected more gradually in their statements.
