The future of Treasure Bay’s ongoing transformation will largely depend on the city’s ability to fund future improvements, according to Mayor John Doctor, who said upcoming budget decisions will play a key role in determining what comes next for the waterfront recreation complex.
Treasure Bay, a 17-acre city-owned property on Boca Ciega Bay, has been the focus of redevelopment efforts for several years. The site sustained significant damage during recent hurricanes, but Treasure Island city leaders have continued work on a series of improvements, including a living shoreline project, walking trails, tennis court upgrades, and a kayak launch.
City officials have discussed additional amenities that could be added in the future, including expanded playground facilities, a splash pad, and a waterfront performance venue. However, Doctor said those plans will depend on available funding as commissioners prepare future budgets.
The future of the former golf course remains a point of debate among residents. Some community members have urged the city to restore the course, citing its history and past public support. Others, including city leaders, have questioned whether returning to the previous layout would be the best use of the property, suggesting alternative recreational features could serve a broader segment of the community.
Treasure Bay has been the subject of multiple public engagement efforts over the past decade as city officials work to develop a long-term vision for the site. The city’s strategic plans have identified the property as a flagship waterfront recreation facility, with goals that include expanding outdoor recreation opportunities, improving environmental sustainability, and enhancing public access.
As Treasure Island begins its next budget cycle, city leaders are expected to weigh competing priorities while determining how quickly additional improvements at Treasure Bay can move forward.
