Commuters using the Lee Roy Selmon Expressway’s Reversible Express Lanes will see a new operating schedule beginning Sunday, July 13, as the Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority implements changes intended to simplify traffic flow.
Under the new schedule, the reversible lanes will open one hour earlier for westbound traffic, operating from 5 a.m. until noon on weekdays for drivers heading toward downtown Tampa. At noon, the lanes will reverse direction and remain eastbound toward Brandon until 5 a.m. the following day.
The change eliminates the previous midday split operation, during which portions of the lanes carried traffic in opposite directions. Transportation officials said the revised schedule is designed to create a more consistent traffic pattern, reduce confusion for motorists, and improve traffic flow during peak travel periods.
Weekend and holiday operations will remain unchanged along the Lee Roy Selmon Expressway. The reversible lanes will continue to operate eastbound toward Brandon on weekends and on major holidays, including Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Memorial Day, and New Year’s Day. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Good Friday, Juneteenth, and Veterans Day will continue to follow the standard weekday reversal schedule.
The Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority also noted that operating times may be adjusted as necessary due to traffic conditions, maintenance work, or special events.
Drivers who regularly use the Reversible Express Lanes are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the updated schedule before traveling next week.
