Parents in Hillsborough County are moving quickly to secure spots in the county’s after-school program as enrollment opens ahead of the 2026-27 school year.
County officials say many program locations are already approaching capacity just days after registration began and are encouraging families to enroll as soon as possible if they plan to participate.
The after-school program is offered at recreation centers throughout Hillsborough County and provides transportation from participating schools. Students can complete homework, participate in sports and recreational activities, and remain under staff supervision until 6 p.m.
The program costs $40 per week, making it a lower-cost alternative to many private before- and after-school care providers, which can charge significantly more for similar services.
At Keystone Park and Recreation Center in Odessa, 38 of the site’s 55 available after-school spaces were filled within days of registration opening. Staff expects the remaining spots to be claimed soon.
County recreation staff say demand for the program has continued to grow because of its affordability. Officials note that some locations have filled within minutes during previous enrollment periods.
Each participating school is assigned to a designated county recreation center, with assignment information provided during the application process.
The first day of school for students in Hillsborough County is scheduled for Aug. 10. Parents interested in the county’s after-school program are encouraged to register before spaces fill up.
