Despite carrying billions of dollars in debt and ongoing negotiations with creditors, Brightline says passengers should not expect any disruption to train service during one of the year’s busiest travel periods.

The privately operated passenger rail company reported strong demand over the Independence Day holiday weekend, noting that ridership continues to grow as more travelers choose rail over driving. Company officials said operations are continuing as normal and emphasized that customers should not be concerned about changes to scheduled service.

Brightline has been working with creditors for months to address its financial obligations. The company has approximately $5.5 billion in debt and recently secured additional time to negotiate with holders of nearly $1 billion in commuter bonds after extending the deadline for a key interest payment to July 15. The extension allows the company to continue discussions over financing and debt restructuring options.

The company has stated that it continues to explore ways to strengthen its financial position while avoiding bankruptcy. Brightline also recently increased a debt offering to raise additional capital and has continued making payments on certain senior debt obligations using available reserves.

Financial concerns surfaced earlier this year when Brightline warned investors that there was substantial doubt about its ability to continue operating without additional financing. Credit rating agencies have also cited the company’s financial challenges, even as passenger numbers have increased since service expanded between Orlando and South Florida.

Brightline officials say customer demand remains strong and that the company’s focus is on providing reliable service while working through its financial restructuring. The company continues to operate its passenger rail network connecting Orlando, West Palm Beach, Boca Raton, Aventura, Fort Lauderdale, and Miami.
