As summer vacation continues, a mobile library is traveling across Pinellas County to help students maintain their reading skills before the new school year begins.
The Juvenile Welfare Board of Pinellas County has launched its ninth annual Book Bus, carrying 10,000 free books to children throughout the county to help prevent summer slide. The bus will make 85 stops through July 23, allowing children to select and keep two books at no cost. Organizers expect the program to reach approximately 5,000 children during its summer tour.
The Book Bus has been converted into a mobile library, with traditional bus seats replaced by bookshelves stocked with titles for a variety of ages, interests, and reading levels. The program is designed to encourage children to continue reading during the summer months when schools are out of session.
Educators have long warned about the “summer slide,” a decline in academic skills that can occur when students spend extended periods away from classroom instruction. Research has found that students may lose one to three months of learning progress over the summer without regular academic practice.
School leaders say consistent reading, along with everyday learning experiences, can help students retain academic skills before classes resume in August. Superintendent Kevin Hendrick said that practical activities, combined with regular reading, help students return to school closer to the achievement level they ended the previous year at.
District officials say literacy initiatives, including the Book Bus, have contributed to recent academic gains. According to Pinellas County Schools, third-grade reading proficiency reached 70% for the first time in district history, surpassing the state average and ranking seventh among Florida school districts. The district also earned its third consecutive statewide “A” rating during the most recent school year.
