Hillsborough County commissioners are seeking a detailed report on how Florida’s newly passed property tax relief plan could affect the county, following the legislature’s approval of the measure during a special session on Tuesday.

The amendment will appear on the November ballot, and if approved by 60% of voters, it would raise the homestead exemption to $150,000, with the ultimate goal of eliminating property taxes over time.

Commissioners have asked the county administrator and chief financial administrator to produce a report examining the measure’s potential effects on county revenues, service delivery, financial planning, and long-term fiscal sustainability. They plan to review the findings at their June 17 meeting.

Hillsborough County Property Appraiser Bob Henriquez noted that there are 315,000 homesteaded properties in the county and 73,000 in Tampa, and that housing affordability has become a pressing concern for residents.

Views among officials are mixed. Lt. Jay Collins argued the plan is worthwhile despite potential impacts on public services, saying the money belongs to taxpayers and that government budgets have grown without a matching increase in population. The property appraiser’s office has adopted a more cautious tone, with Henriquez publicly noting that people could be harmed by the reform’s downstream effects on services.
