Pasco County Expands Flood Monitoring and Preparedness Efforts Ahead of Hurricane Season

·

As the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season gets underway, Pasco County officials are highlighting new flood-monitoring and preparedness initiatives developed in response to the widespread flooding during the 2024 hurricane season.

County leaders said the back-to-back impacts of Hurricanes Helene and Milton exposed vulnerabilities across the region, including flooded neighborhoods and evacuation routes that became impassable due to high water. According to Pasco County Chief Strategy and Sustainability Officer Dr. Marc Bellas, several major evacuation corridors were submerged during the storms, affecting not only Pasco residents but also evacuees traveling from neighboring counties.

In response, the county has invested in new flood-resilience measures, including a network of water-level sensors and monitoring equipment to provide real-time data and improve flood forecasting. Officials have also completed vulnerability assessments and are developing a program known as FloodVision, which uses elevation data and modeling technology to simulate how flooding could affect specific neighborhoods and structures under various storm scenarios.

County officials said the goal is to provide residents with better information before and during storms so they can make informed decisions about evacuation and flood risks. Bellas noted that severe flooding can occur outside traditional flood-prone areas under extreme conditions, as many residents discovered during the 2024 storms.

The renewed focus on preparedness comes as forecasters predict another active hurricane season. Emergency management officials continue to encourage residents to review evacuation plans, know their flood and evacuation zones, and prepare emergency supplies before a storm threatens the area.
