The National Hurricane Center is tracking two weather systems in the Atlantic that could develop into tropical or subtropical depressions in the coming days.
One system—a non-tropical area of low pressure—is expected to form within a day or so, a few hundred miles off the coast of North Carolina. As it moves northeast over the warm waters of the Gulf Stream, some development is possible. However, by early next week, the system is likely to reach colder waters and stronger upper-level winds, which would limit any further development. The NHC gives this system a low 10% chance of formation over both the next 48 hours and the next seven days.
Farther out in the central tropical Atlantic, another system—a tropical wave—is also being monitored. While development is not expected in the next couple of days, conditions could become more favorable late this weekend or early next week as the system moves west-northwest to northwest. The NHC estimates a 50% chance of formation over the next seven days, but just a 0% chance in the short term.
