Tampa Bay’s postal services are gearing up for a bustling holiday shipping season, with Tampa Postmaster James Chambers revealing critical mailing dates to ensure gifts arrive by Christmas.
For those planning to send packages via Ground Advantage or First Class, the recommended shipping deadline is Wednesday, December 18. Priority mail customers should dispatch their packages by Thursday, December 19. Procrastinators can still use priority mail express up to Saturday, December 21.
The local post office is experiencing a significant surge in activity. Since December 1, postal workers have processed approximately 466,000 deliveries, representing a 13% increase compared to last year. Chambers anticipates an additional 90,000 to 100,000 packages will be mailed next week.
“It’s a challenging time of year for us,” Chambers acknowledged. “We always try to staff up well and prepare our carriers.”
The postmaster offered two key recommendations for customers: use informed delivery for expensive items and ensure someone is available to receive packages at their destination.
Nationally, the US Postal Service has implemented several improvements to handle the holiday rush, including new vehicles, more precise operating systems, and hundreds of new package sorting machines. Despite the increased volume, USPS plans to hire only a few seasonal workers, having stabilized its workforce throughout the year.
Customers are advised to plan ahead and ship early to avoid potential delivery delays during the peak holiday season.
