In the midst of the busiest time of year for the United States Postal Service, over half a dozen post offices in the Tampa Bay area remain closed due to damage from consecutive hurricanes.
Customers are growing frustrated with the lack of a clear timeline for reopening.
Jim Reatherford, a long-time user of a P.O. box at the Ruskin post office, expressed his frustration: “Since 1963, we’ve been having a great deal of difficulty getting our mail, and it’s very inconvenient.” The Ruskin post office has been closed for nearly three months due to damage from Hurricane Helene, which caused flooding and a major roof leak. Customers are now forced to use the Old Sun City post office, resulting in long waits.
“Everyone with a P.O. box here has to stand in a single-file line to get their mail from one person who has to find it from I don’t know where,” said Reatherford. “It doesn’t seem very organized, and it takes a long time to find your mail.”
The Ruskin location is one of several post offices still closed, according to a post made over a month ago on the USPS website.

“I’m frustrated, but what can I do?” said Diana Bearmudez. “If I don’t pick up my mail, one of my bills is going to be cut off.”
During a tour of the Ybor City distribution center, a USPS spokesperson mentioned that an answer on reopening timelines would not come before Wednesday.
The post office in Balm has some services available in a mobile unit, a solution Reatherford wishes could be implemented in Ruskin. “I don’t see why they couldn’t park some repurposed portable classrooms or something,” he said. “That’s what they should be doing here.”
Adding to his frustration, Reatherford recently received a bill for the P.O. box he currently cannot access. “It’s very inconvenient, and I would like to not pay the bill,” he said.
The only other post office in the state still closed besides those in Tampa Bay is in Fort Myers.
