The National Hurricane Center says a disturbance moving across the subtropical Atlantic could organize into a tropical depression later this week, giving storm-weary Floridians another system to watch as hurricane season grinds on.

The trough of low pressure, located east-southeast of Bermuda, is currently producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms, according to the NHC. Forecasters say environmental conditions — which are presently working against the system due to strong wind shear — are expected to grow more favorable for development over the next several days.

Should the system organize, the NHC projects it would happen late this week as the disturbance drifts slowly west-northwestward across the central subtropical Atlantic.

The agency puts the seven-day formation chance at 40 percent.

It remains too early to determine whether the system, if it develops, would threaten Florida or the broader Gulf Coast. Residents are advised to watch for updates rather than react to a system that hasn’t yet formed — a reminder that not every blip on the tropical outlook map warrants alarm, even as headlines tend to turn uncertainty into urgency.

The National Hurricane Center issues tropical weather outlooks multiple times daily during hurricane season, which runs through November 30.
