Pinellas County Schools officials say community members still have opportunities to provide input as the district continues evaluating additional school closures and consolidations driven by declining student enrollment.
District leaders updated the Pinellas County School Board on Tuesday about the ongoing planning process, emphasizing that no final decisions have been made regarding the next round of potential school changes. Officials said recommendations are expected to be presented this fall following continued public engagement.
The district has already held three community meetings to gather feedback from residents. School leaders said comments from those meetings, along with responses submitted through an online survey, will be considered as administrators develop recommendations. Additional opportunities for public input will be available before any final action is taken.
Pinellas County Schools has cited declining enrollment and the need to make more efficient use of district facilities as the primary reasons for considering additional consolidations. Earlier this year, the School Board approved the closure of Cross Bayou Elementary School and Disston Academy, along with other campus reconfigurations, as part of the district’s first phase of consolidation efforts.
District officials said they are evaluating factors including building utilization, student enrollment trends, transportation, academic programming and community impact before making recommendations.
No votes on additional school closures or consolidations are expected until later this year. School leaders encouraged residents to continue participating in the process by attending meetings and submitting feedback before recommendations are finalized.
