Construction is continuing on a new mixed-use path along the west side of 4th Street North between Gandy Boulevard and Interstate 275 in St. Petersburg, a project led by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT). The recreation trail is designed to provide a dedicated route for pedestrians and bicyclists while improving connectivity in the area.

The project is intended to reduce roadway congestion and create safer options for people traveling without a vehicle. Construction activity is visible along the corridor as crews continue work on the new path.

Local cycling advocates say the addition of a separated path will improve safety for people traveling through one of the city’s busier commercial areas. The route already includes bike lanes, but the new facility will provide additional space dedicated to pedestrians and cyclists.

Anne Fidanzato, manager and co-owner of ABC Bicycles in St. Petersburg, said the area is already popular with cyclists and believes the project will make riding safer and encourage more people to travel by bike.

St. Petersburg’s relatively flat terrain and expanding network of bicycle infrastructure have made cycling a popular transportation and recreation option. Supporters of the project say adding protected connections between existing routes can help improve accessibility throughout the city.

FDOT has not announced a completion date for the project.
