A proposed data center in Lakeland will not come before city commissioners Monday, officials confirmed, though the project is moving into its early review stages.
The city has received an application for the project, referred to as “Project Swan,” which would be situated near Old Tampa Highway and Wilkenson Road and span more than 60 acres.
City Manager Shawn Sherrouse informed commissioners that the application contains only basic information and that officials do not yet have full details on the proposal. As a result, the project will not be taken up during Monday’s city commission meeting.
An initial concept review is scheduled for Wednesday, June 3, involving several city departments and the project’s developers.
The city stated in a press release that as the review process moves forward, the public will be encouraged to attend and participate in future public hearings to provide community input.
Lakeland is not the first Polk County community to field such a proposal. In April, Fort Meade commissioners approved a development agreement for a data center despite pushback from local residents.
