Florida cash transactions will be rounded up or down to the nearest nickel under a new state law that takes effect immediately.

Gov. Ron DeSantis signed Senate Bill 1074 on Monday, requiring that any cash purchase be adjusted to the nearest five-cent increment when the one-cent coin is no longer being produced by the U.S. Mint. The legislation responds to the federal government’s decision to halt the production of pennies.

Under the law, totals ending in one or two cents will be rounded down to zero, while those ending in three or four cents will be rounded up to five. Totals ending in six or seven cents will be rounded down to five, and those ending in eight or nine cents will be rounded up to the next dime.

The rounding requirement applies only to cash payments. Transactions completed by credit card, debit card, check, gift card, money order, or electronic transfer are not affected, unless cash is being returned to the customer.

The law took effect upon the governor’s signature.
