Florida drivers looking for relief at the pump will have a new option starting tomorrow, but experts say it may not be right for every vehicle.

The state has issued an emergency order allowing gas stations statewide to sell E-15 fuel — commonly known as winter-blend gasoline — for 90 days beginning May 1. The move is aimed at lowering gas prices amid elevated gas prices. According to AAA, gas is averaging around $4.04 per gallon nationwide and just over $3.96 in the Tampa Bay area.

E-15 contains 15% ethanol and is typically priced 5 to 10 cents less per gallon than conventional fuel because it costs less to produce.

However, AAA is urging drivers to check compatibility before filling up. “Your fuel economy on E-15 is not typically as good, and there are only certain vehicles that are designed to run on it,” said AAA spokesman Mark Jenkins. “Your vehicle has to be a 2001 or newer.”

There are also environmental concerns. During warmer months, E-15 can produce more emissions, raising concerns about summertime air quality. Winter-blend fuel is normally phased out before summer precisely because of those higher emissions.

The 90-day window runs from May 1, during which Florida gas stations statewide may sell the winter-blend fuel.
