A bill that passed unanimously through the Florida Senate last week could allow churches, temples, mosques, and other houses of worship to use armed volunteers for security instead of licensed, paid guards.

Senate Bill 52, sponsored by Republican Sen. Don Gaetz of Niceville, would exempt certain members of congregations from the state’s security licensing requirements. Supporters say the measure is intended to reduce costs while maintaining safety at religious facilities, where professional security can run $900 to $1,000 for a two-hour event, according to one Tampa pastor.

The bill comes as concerns about gun violence at houses of worship have grown nationally. Security trainer Aaron Chappell, co-founder of Vulture Training Group, noted that large gatherings make religious institutions attractive targets and argued that having someone on-site during an incident is preferable to waiting several minutes for a response.

The bill now moves to the Florida House for a floor vote. If passed there and signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis, it would take effect in July.
