Florida lawmakers are considering significant property tax relief as the legislative session reaches its halfway point, with a proposed constitutional amendment that could substantially increase homestead exemptions for insured homeowners.

House Joint Resolution 209 proposes raising the homestead exemption to $200,000 for homeowners who maintain comprehensive multi-peril insurance coverage. The measure represents a major expansion of existing homestead exemptions, which currently shield a portion of a home’s value from property taxation.

A full House vote on the resolution is expected in the coming weeks, marking a critical step in the legislative process. As a joint resolution proposing a constitutional amendment, the measure would ultimately require voter approval if it clears both chambers of the Legislature.

The property tax proposal comes as Florida homeowners continue to face rising insurance costs and property valuations. By tying the enhanced exemption to comprehensive insurance coverage, lawmakers appear to be incentivizing homeowners to maintain robust protection for their properties.

Legislators are also addressing insurance-related concerns through additional bills moving through committees. These include measures mandating mediation in homeowner-insurance disputes and legislation prohibiting insurers from dropping coverage solely because of a roof’s condition.

Separately, lawmakers are considering regulations on artificial intelligence. House Bill 1007 and Senate Bill 484 would regulate data centers by eliminating incentives, requiring full electricity rates, and imposing strict water restrictions on these power-intensive facilities.
