Florida legislators are advancing a bill that would eliminate yellow vehicle registration stickers currently displayed on license plates.

House Bill 841 would require motor vehicle registration renewals to be recorded electronically rather than displayed with a physical sticker. Drivers would still be required to renew their registrations and keep written receipts in their vehicles.

Many law enforcement agencies now use automated license plate recognition systems that allow them to check vehicle registrations digitally in seconds, making physical stickers less necessary for enforcement.

Several states, including Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and New Jersey, do not require registration stickers.

The financial impact of the change would vary by county. Miami-Dade County’s Tax Collector’s Office projects potential savings of approximately $2.5 million annually in processing and recording costs.

However, Orange County Tax Collector Scott Randolph said the change would have minimal financial impact locally, noting it would not alter office operations or eliminate the registration transaction requirement.

A House staff analysis did not include a statewide savings estimate. The bill still requires additional legislative approval before becoming law.
