After a quieter-than-usual stretch this month, the Atlantic Basin is beginning to show signs of renewed tropical activity, with two systems now being monitored by the National Hurricane Center (NHC).
The first, a broad disturbance in the central Atlantic, has been designated Invest 92L. Currently spinning over open water, the system poses no immediate threat to land.
The term “invest” signals an official area of interest for forecasters, allowing the NHC to run specialized models to project its potential path and development better.
As of Tuesday morning, the NHC gives Invest 92L a 90% chance of strengthening into a tropical depression within the next two days—and the same high odds over the next week. Should it organize into a tropical storm, it would take the next name on this year’s list: Gabrielle.
Forecast models largely agree the system would remain north of the Caribbean and curve into the central Atlantic, keeping it well offshore from the U.S.
In addition, the NHC is tracking a second disturbance emerging off the African coast. While this system carries only a low chance of development over the next week, meteorologists will continue monitoring as it drifts westward.
