Homeowners across the Tampa Bay region are increasingly entangled in legal disputes with Florida Roof Specialists, a contractor accused of placing liens and pursuing lawsuits to enforce payments.
The Florida Attorney General’s Office confirmed it has launched an active consumer investigation into the company, citing 128 formal complaints. Notably, 61 of those complaints were filed by senior citizens, raising concerns about potential targeting of vulnerable residents.
Among those affected is Hernando County homeowner Felica Shanklin, who now faces a lawsuit that could result in the loss of her home. Shanklin said she was initially approached by a salesman from Florida Roof Specialists who claimed her roof had missing shingles and assured her that the cost of replacement would be covered almost entirely by her insurer. According to Shanklin, she was told her only obligation would be her $2,500 deductible, payable within a year, without mention of additional charges, liens, or foreclosure risk.
“I don’t even sleep some nights because I don’t know what’s going to happen,” Shanklin said, explaining that she lacks the financial resources to hire legal representation to contest the lawsuit.
Florida Roof Specialists and its attorney, Daniel M. Copeland, declined to respond to multiple requests for comment.
The Better Business Bureau currently assigns the company a D+ rating and has issued two alerts, citing what it describes as a “pattern of complaints” alleging that customers were billed substantially more than the amounts covered by their insurance providers.
