A low-pressure system known as Invest-93L, currently off Florida’s east coast, is becoming more organized, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Forecasters say the disturbance is expected to move westward across the Florida peninsula today and reach the northeastern Gulf of Mexico by midweek.

While showers and thunderstorms remain disorganized for now, environmental conditions are favorable for further development. The NHC says a tropical depression could form as the system moves through the northeastern and north-central Gulf.

Forecasters warn of the potential for heavy rain and flash flooding across parts of Florida and the north-central Gulf region through midweek.

The chance of development into a tropical depression is 40% over the next 48 hours and remains at 40% over the next seven days.
