A low-pressure system may develop near Florida by the Fourth of July weekend, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Forecasters at the NHC say a stalled and weakening frontal boundary off the southeastern U.S. coast could give rise to an area of low pressure by the weekend.

The system could form over Atlantic waters off the Southeast coast, across Florida, or in the eastern Gulf of Mexico.

If it develops, it may become a tropical or subtropical system, though forecasters expect it to remain nearly stationary.

There is little chance of formation over the next 48 hours, but the National Hurricane Center gives it a 30% chance of development over the next seven days.

If named, the storm would be called Chantal.
