Tropical Storm Andrea has officially formed in the Atlantic, marking the first named storm of the 2025 hurricane season.
The National Hurricane Center reports that Andrea is expected to weaken and dissipate by Wednesday as it remains over open water. The system poses no threat to land, and no coastal watches or warnings have been issued.
Meteorologist Megan Borowski with the Florida Public Radio Emergency Network said the storm is located in the North Atlantic, more than 1,000 miles northeast of Bermuda and over 1,000 miles west of the Azores.
“We don’t expect the storm to retain its strength very long,” Borowski said. “It’s moving over cooler waters and should weaken into a tropical depression — with winds below 39 mph — by Wednesday. Fortunately, it will stay far from land and poses no threat to us.”
She noted that this year’s season started later than usual. On average, the first named storm forms by June 20.
Borowski added that forecasters expect above-average activity this season, and residents should stay prepared as the peak months approach.
