Unsurprisingly, Hurricanes Helene and Milton have left Gulfport’s volleyball courts in ruins.

These courts were central to community activities, serving leagues, tournaments, and casual players alike. However, very little of the original structure remains.

Tyler Penberthy, a long-time volleyball player and coach, has felt the impact directly. “Not having the Gulfport courts has really hindered my business running private lessons and coaching,” he lamented.

Where there were once six vibrant volleyball courts by the water, there now stands only a fence, with water encroaching into areas previously untouched by the tides.

“It’s just really hard to see the devastation caused by the hurricane,” Penberthy reflected. “We had these beautiful fenced-in courts with lights and lines, nets, antennas, and everything we needed as beach volleyball players. And now it’s sadly all gone.”

Despite the significant damage, Gulfport City Manager James O’Reilly is optimistic about rebuilding. Although no specific timeline has been set, he hopes that volleyball enthusiasts will be able to enjoy the courts once again by next summer.
