The United Way of Central Florida is stepping in to assist those impacted by Hurricane Milton, including Lake Bonny residents still grappling with the storm’s aftermath. The nonprofit will host a community recovery outreach event this Saturday at Lakeland’s RP Funding Center to provide vital resources and support.
Community Outreach Event Details
The event, scheduled from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., will offer a wide range of resources, including:
- FEMA assistance
- Food and toiletry kits
- Health services
- Other essential support
“This event is designed to raise awareness about available services, provide resources to those affected, and address ongoing challenges faced by our neighbors,” the United Way said in a press release.
Christina Criser Jackson, President and CEO of United Way of Central Florida, emphasized the importance of community support. “Many of our neighbors are still struggling in the aftermath of Hurricane Milton, and this event is a crucial step in ensuring help is accessible. We are deeply grateful to our partners and committed to connecting community members with the resources they need.”
Resident Concerns Highlight Lingering Challenges
At a city commission meeting on November 18, Lake Bonny residents shared frustrations over continued flooding and inadequate cleanup efforts.
- Nicole Ramirez, a homeowner, described the dire state of her property.
- “My homeowner’s insurance sent me a letter—they’re dropping my coverage,” Ramirez said. “I have mold, sewage, and standing water in my home. One dumpster for all the homes in our cul-de-sac wasn’t enough. I couldn’t even get most of my house cleared out.”
- Ramirez also called for displacement assistance, citing the costs of commuting long distances daily to clean her home.
- Michael Coker, another resident, recounted cleanup challenges.
- “I live on Longfellow Boulevard,” Coker said. “I’ve removed five rooms of redwood flooring, now sitting by the road. A garbage truck worker told me the county won’t pick it up—even though they have the equipment to handle it. I don’t.”
Help Available for Those in Need
The United Way of Central Florida encourages all affected residents to attend the recovery event. For those unable to attend, assistance can still be accessed by:
- Dialing 211
- Texting their ZIP code to 898-211
This initiative aims to ease the burden on Hurricane Milton survivors and provide the tools needed to rebuild and recover.
