Many Floridians are still working to rebuild their lives after recent hurricanes, with FEMA providing critical support to those affected.

For survivors of Hurricane Debby, the deadline to apply for FEMA assistance is quickly approaching on November 12, according to FEMA External Affairs Officer Brady Penn. For those impacted by Hurricane Helene, the deadline is November 27, while applications for Hurricane Milton relief are open until December 11.

FEMA teams are actively working with survivors at Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs) to help them register for individual assistance and address any casework needs. “People here are working closely with survivors, helping them access FEMA assistance and work through their individual cases,” Penn said.

For Angelito Quijano, DRC Manager, and his team, this mission is personal. “We’re here seven days a week, working 12-hour shifts,” he explained. “Knowing we’re making a difference in our communities keeps us motivated.”

Listening to survivors’ stories has a powerful impact on Quijano and his team. With years of experience in disaster response, he’s been sent to hard-hit areas across the country and feels a strong commitment to support those in need.

“I was part of the response for Hurricane Ian in Fort Myers last year, and I recently came from Arkansas, where tornadoes caused major devastation,” he said. “It’s emotionally challenging, but it strengthens our belief that the work we’re doing is vital.”
