Tarpon Springs Parents Won’t Go Quietly on School Cuts

·

Pinellas County school leaders say they must act on falling enrollment, and Tarpon Springs parents made clear Monday night that they want other options on the table before the district closes or consolidates schools.

The district’s “Planning for Progress” proposals could affect more than 10 schools through closures or consolidation into K-8 campuses. Deputy Superintendent Stephanie Woodford presented the plan at Tarpon Springs Middle School, and a similar meeting was held at Tarpon Springs Fundamental. District leaders told parents that enrollment has dropped over the past few years, so the district must consider changes.

Parents want answers and alternatives

Parents pressed officials on what else the district could do to keep children in their current schools. Shauntel Smith, whose daughter attends Tarpon Springs Middle School, said she understands the pressures the district faces but wants more time for discussion. She said she hopes for an outcome that keeps Tarpon Springs students in Tarpon Springs, and described the schools as central to the community and to children’s sense of belonging.

Transportation was another sticking point. District leaders said students of different ages would share buses and be seated by age group, a detail that drew concern from families.

Vote comes tonight

The school board is expected to vote on the proposal at tonight’s meeting. If it passes, the changes would roll out in phases beginning as early as next school year.

The district has already revised its proposals once in response to community feedback.
