Beachgoers visiting St. Pete Beach are now paying more to park, as the rate increases that city commissioners approved in late March took effect last week.
The new rates bring the weekday cost to $5 per hour and the weekend rate, which now includes Friday, to $6 per hour. During peak tourist season, from February through April, an additional $1 per hour applies.
The increases make St. Pete Beach the most expensive parking destination along the Pinellas County coastline, where most nearby communities charge between roughly $2.50 and $4.50 per hour.
City officials say the changes are projected to generate more than $1.7 million in additional revenue annually — money the city says it urgently needs to fund road maintenance and upgrades to its sewer and stormwater infrastructure, which carries an estimated price tag of more than $200 million.
The rate hike was approved by city commissioners on a 4-1 vote on March 24. The flat rate for holidays and special events will also nearly double, rising to $40 per day.
Assistant City Manager Adam Poirrier said vendors needed time to update their systems after the commission’s vote, which is why the new rates didn’t take effect immediately.
City officials have also signaled that further changes could be on the way. Mayor Scott Tate has asked staff to develop a duration-based fee structure, arguing that pricing tied to length of stay — rather than time of day — would encourage visitor turnover and benefit local restaurants and shops. Staff is expected to return with a proposal in the coming weeks.
St. Pete Beach is the latest in a series of Pinellas County beach communities to raise parking rates. Indian Rocks Beach raised its rates to $4.50 per hour last month, and Tarpon Springs has also been debating new charges at Sunset Beach.
