The Hillsborough County School Board voted Wednesday to close three schools and restructure a fourth, citing low enrollment and a need for greater operational efficiency across the district.
Graham Elementary, Madison Middle, and Pizzo K-8 will be shut down entirely. Pizzo K-8 is located on the University of South Florida campus, where its lease is expiring and will not be renewed.
Sulphur Springs K-8 will be converted to an elementary school only, with its middle school students reassigned to other district schools. Officials cited low enrollment as the reason, noting that only about 120 students — roughly 40 per grade — are currently enrolled in grades six through eight at the school. The district said the number is insufficient to fund the range of electives and programs available at larger middle schools, and that relocating those students will give them more opportunities.
Nine other schools in the district will see boundary adjustments to address overcrowding.
District officials framed the school closures and other changes as a way to improve efficiency across a school system managing significant gaps between overcrowded and under-enrolled campuses.
