A lane closure tied to a Pinellas County infrastructure project is creating traffic backups at the intersection of 54th Avenue North and 113th Street.

The westbound right-turn lane at that intersection has been closed since late last year as crews work to upgrade traffic signals. Pinellas County says the project involves replacing traffic light span wires with mast arms — a sturdier design intended to better withstand storm damage. The county is making similar upgrades at several intersections as part of the broader effort.

Nearby residents say the single open lane is straining traffic flow, particularly in the evenings. One driver who travels through the intersection several times a week described backups during afternoon rush hour that can require waiting through two or three signal cycles before clearing the turn.

The construction at this intersection is expected to be completed by late July.
