The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has installed new asphalt speed tables along a roadway in Sarasota County to slow traffic and improve safety, according to officials.
Speed tables were installed in the St. Armands area along State Road 789, also known as John Ringling Boulevard. The devices are designed to reduce vehicle speeds while providing a smoother ride than traditional speed humps.
FDOT said the improvements are intended to enhance safety for residents, visitors, and nearby neighborhoods by encouraging more consistent driving speeds.
The installation is part of the agency’s broader effort to implement traffic-calming measures in areas with heavy pedestrian traffic and congestion. Work on the project included removing older speed humps, resurfacing sections of the roadway, and installing the new asphalt tables.
Officials have indicated the changes are aimed at creating a more predictable traffic environment and reducing the likelihood of crashes along the corridor.
