Safety Harbor city leaders say they hope to reopen the city’s pier this summer after it was destroyed during the 2024 hurricane season.

Mayor Joe Ayoub said construction is progressing well, with electrical and structural work among the remaining tasks.

The marina next to the Safety Harbor pier, also damaged during the 2024 storms, is being completely replaced as well.

Local business owners say the pier’s absence has taken a measurable toll. Tom Bassano, owner of Bassano Cheesecake Cafe on Main Street, said the two-year closure dampened foot traffic and contributed to what he described as the worst summer his business had ever experienced. He said he is hopeful the reopening will help restore normal visitor levels.

Anca Nastase, who has run Kaia Bowls for two years, also expressed optimism that the pier will draw more visitors to the area.

Safety Harbor is known for its small-town atmosphere, with locally owned shops and restaurants along Main Street. The pier has long been considered one of the waterfront town’s signature attractions, and city officials and business owners alike are hoping its return will bring renewed tourism activity to the area.
