A Florida House committee has unanimously approved legislation that would end the requirement for yellow vehicle registration decals on license plates.
The Government Operations Committee backed House Bill 841, sponsored by Rep. Tom Fabricio, R-Miami Lakes, which would replace the physical stickers with an electronic registration system. The measure has one more committee stop before reaching the House floor.
The bill is expected to reduce costs, with the Miami-Dade Tax Collector’s Office estimating digital registration could save approximately $2.5 million annually in processing registrations and renewals.
Gov. Ron DeSantis endorsed the proposal in December, urging Fabricio to advance the legislation.
Currently, the yellow validation stickers serve as visual confirmation that vehicles are properly registered. However, many law enforcement officers now verify registrations electronically using automated license plate recognition systems, making the physical decals less necessary.
Under existing law, vehicle registrations are valid for 12 months, with an option to extend to 24 months.
A companion bill in the Senate, SB 982, filed by Sen. Ana Maria Rodriguez, R-Homestead, has not yet been scheduled for committee review.
