A $15.3 million pedestrian overpass on the Courtney Campbell Causeway is expected to open by the end of the year, providing a walking and cycling route between Clearwater Beach and Tampa.

The city of Clearwater is now planning improvements to the 1.6-mile Bayshore Trail, which will connect directly to the overpass. The trail runs from Gulf-to-Bay Boulevard north to the Safety Harbor line.

Clearwater’s Parks and Recreation Department has applied for a grant from the Florida Department of Transportation’s Recreational Trails Program to fund amenities including trash cans, picnic tables, water fountains, dog waste stations, and signage.

Officials are also considering building a trailhead near the new overpass with bike racks, benches, and gathering spaces. The trailhead could provide parking for visitors from Clearwater Beach or Tampa.

Some proposed work addresses aging infrastructure, including repairs to a boardwalk near Drew Street that has been damaged by tides and weather. City officials said they plan to remove the boardwalk section, raise it, and replace it as a long-term goal. Plans also include replacing exercise equipment at Cooper’s Bayou Park.

City leaders held a community meeting Tuesday to gather public input on the proposed trail enhancements as they pursue grant funding and finalize plans.
