A section of the public fishing pier at Picnic Island Park in Tampa collapsed late Saturday night, city officials confirmed, prompting an ongoing safety investigation.
According to the City of Tampa, the collapse happened while the pier was open to the public, but no injuries were reported and no one was trapped in the incident. Officials said the cause of the collapse remains unclear and the structure is being examined to determine what led to the failure.
A city spokesperson told local media, “the pier was open at the time”, and emphasized that initial assessments are underway to determine next steps for repair and public safety.
Picnic Island Park, located in South Tampa, is a popular recreational area managed by the City of Tampa Parks and Recreation. The park offers amenities including a sandy beach, playgrounds, boat ramps, picnic areas, and a fishing pier that extends over Old Tampa Bay.
The fishing pier, constructed of concrete and historically used for shoreline angling and bay views, had been considered in good condition in past state surveys, though typical wear and coastal exposure are ongoing considerations for such structures.
City officials have not yet provided a timeline for repairs or clarified whether access to the pier and adjacent facilities will be restricted in the coming days. Investigators are reviewing structural conditions and safety protocols as part of the follow-up.
Residents and park visitors are awaiting more information from the city on both the cause of the collapse and plans for restoring the pier — a fixture of local outdoor recreation.
