Proposed property tax reductions being considered by Florida lawmakers could affect the state’s housing market by potentially allowing buyers to purchase more expensive homes, according to a Central Florida real estate agent.
Florida lawmakers are reviewing several proposals that would reduce property taxes for homeowners if approved by voters. While it remains unclear which proposal legislators might advance, any reduction could influence how much buyers can spend on homes.
Orlando realtor Rosa Hughes said lower property taxes would leave buyers with more money to spend on higher-priced homes or renovations. Buyers who pay less in property taxes could use those savings for home improvements or to pay down mortgage principal faster.
Sayerlen Cardier, a neurosurgery nurse practitioner currently searching for a home with Hughes’ assistance, said reduced property taxes could help her afford a better location or larger property.
Data from the Orlando Regional Realtor Association shows Central Florida home prices have stabilized after rising throughout 2024. In December 2025, the median home price was just above $380,000, remaining mostly flat compared to the previous year.
Hughes suggested that if property taxes are lowered, increased buyer spending power could drive home values higher, potentially benefiting sellers whose properties would appraise at greater values.
Any property tax measures passed by the state Legislature will be placed on the ballot for voters to decide in November.
