Tax season opens Monday, January 26, with several new provisions resulting from the recently passed Big Beautiful Act.

The IRS will begin accepting tax returns for the 2025 tax year, with the filing deadline set for April 15, 2026. According to Luke Richardson, an associate professor at the University of South Florida, this year brings more changes than usual for taxpayers.

Key provisions in the Big Beautiful Act include a deduction for tip income, allowing workers to deduct up to $25,000 in qualified tips. The act also introduces an overtime deduction, allowing workers to deduct the premium portion of overtime pay, with a maximum deduction of $12,500 for single filers. Additional new deductions cover senior taxpayers and car loan interest, though eligibility requirements apply.

Richardson advises taxpayers to carefully review their documents before filing, noting that most tax preparation software has incorporated these changes.

Free filing options remain available for eligible taxpayers. The IRS Free File program serves those earning $89,000 or less annually, while the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program offers free help from local tax experts in the Tampa Bay area.

IRS data shows that over 60% of filers received refunds last year. Officials recommend electronic filing for those seeking faster refunds.
