Miami-Dade County Tax Collector Dariel Fernandez has proposed eliminating Florida’s physical yellow auto registration decals, arguing the state could instead rely on digital verification systems already in use.

Fernandez announced the proposal last Wednesday, asking the Florida Legislature and Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles to drop the annual sticker requirement. The initiative would not end vehicle registration itself, only the physical decal that drivers currently place on their license plates.

Fernandez stated that Miami-Dade residents alone could save millions annually by eliminating production, mailing, and replacement costs. He noted that the decals fade, peel, and can be stolen, creating additional burdens for residents.

The proposal points to digital systems that allow law enforcement to instantly verify vehicle registration without physical stickers. Several other states have already abandoned registration stickers in favor of such technology.

The plan will be presented to state leaders, the Florida Tax Collectors Association, and lawmakers from both parties. Informal interviews with Orlando shoppers indicated support for the change, with residents citing convenience as a primary benefit.
