The Southwest Florida Water Management District has declared a Phase I Water Shortage through July 1, 2026, as the region contends with a 13-inch rainfall deficit and forecasts of continued dry weather.
The declaration does not alter existing watering schedules in the Tampa Bay area but prohibits wasteful water use practices. Under the restrictions, residents cannot leave hoses running unattended or water lawns more than twice weekly.
District officials are encouraging homeowners to inspect irrigation systems for leaks and malfunctioning equipment ahead of winter months, when lawns require less moisture. Michelle Hopkins, the district’s regulation division director, suggested residents consider reducing watering frequency or pausing irrigation entirely during certain periods.
The declaration requires all cities and counties within the district to submit monthly reports on enforcement of watering restrictions to ensure compliance with existing rules.
Watering schedules vary by locality. Residents can verify their area’s specific restrictions through their local government websites.
