Treasure Island city commissioners this week denied a request from the owners of Thunderbird Beach Resort to rebuild taller following hurricane damage.

The landmark hotel has been closed since Hurricane Helene, with owners reporting that damage from Helene and Milton was catastrophic, affecting 80 percent of the property. The nearly two-acre waterfront property is located along Gulf Boulevard.

The owners had previously announced plans to demolish and rebuild the resort. However, nearby residents asked commissioners not to allow increased height and density, with some calling for the city to develop a new master plan before approving such changes.

Local businesses are monitoring the situation closely. Joseph Roth, general manager of Ricky T’s across the street, said this week’s “Sanding Ovations” festival will help gauge the impact of the Thunderbird’s closure on surrounding businesses.

Treasure Island Vice Mayor Tammy Vasquez requested the city issue a request for qualifications for a master planner.
