St. Pete officials have concluded that flooding problems across the city require tailored solutions for each affected neighborhood, following nine walking tours and a public meeting analyzing last year’s hurricane season impacts.
Working with Jacobs Engineering as part of broader storm resiliency planning, the city examined nine neighborhoods: Old Pasadena, Kingston Street, Shore Acres, Bartlett Park, Bonita Bayou, Coquina Key, Harbordale, Childs Park, and Riviera Bay. Each area faces distinct challenges from storm surge, heavy rainfall, and geographic features.
Mayor Ken Welch said the collected data and resident feedback will guide upcoming infrastructure projects, including the stormwater master plan, the St. Pete Agile Resilience Plan (SPAR), and the seawall study.
The city released an interactive map detailing findings from each neighborhood, including resident storm reports and proposed projects for the communities under study.
Officials noted that while some areas, like Shore Acres, have historically experienced flooding, other neighborhoods faced unexpected flooding during last year’s hurricanes, prompting the investigation into flood-prevention strategies.
