Pinellas County Schools held a community meeting Monday night at Largo High School to address declining enrollment and gather public input on the district’s future planning.
Enrollment dropped from nearly 78,000 students last school year to just over 74,000 this school year, a decrease of 3,651 students, according to district officials.
Chief Operations Officer Jennifer Dull presented information on the enrollment decline and potential uses for empty school buildings. Rather than taking questions during the meeting, the district set up boards where attendees could post written suggestions and concerns.
Dull said enrollment is not expected to increase in future years, prompting the district to engage in long-term planning discussions with the community.
Three additional meetings are scheduled across Pinellas County, with the next session set for December 2 in Dunedin. District officials said community feedback will help inform recommendations to the school board and superintendent about the future of Pinellas County Schools.
