Multiple businesses at John’s Pass have reported receiving counterfeit $20 bills, prompting an investigation by the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office.
Business owner Hubbard said security videos show two people visiting several shops and using fake $20 bills to make purchases or get change. His store’s cashiers accepted three counterfeit bills that the bank later identified as having been “scrubbed and reprinted”.
Hubbard noted that even small losses can significantly impact daily profits, but expressed confidence that investigators will identify those responsible. He emphasized the need for businesses to remain vigilant in the cash-heavy tourist area, where high transaction volumes make it a target.
The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office declined to provide additional details, stating the investigation remains open and active.
