Forward Pinellas, a transportation planning organization, was awarded a $320,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Safe Streets and Roads for All program. The funding will support a comprehensive road safety action plan to reduce traffic-related injuries and fatalities across the county.
The initiative will focus on analyzing crash data to pinpoint high-risk corridors and intersections. Forward Pinellas plans to collaborate with local governments, law enforcement, and community stakeholders to develop targeted strategies for improving road safety. These may include infrastructure upgrades, traffic calming measures, and enhanced pedestrian and cyclist protections.
Pinellas County has one of the highest rates of pedestrian fatalities in Florida, making the grant a critical step toward reversing that trend. The safety action plan is expected to guide future investments and policy decisions, aiming to create safer, more accessible streets for all users.
The grant is part of a broader federal effort to support Vision Zero goals nationwide, which aim to eliminate traffic deaths through proactive planning and community engagement. Forward Pinellas anticipates completing the safety plan within the next year.
