Hurricane Melissa formed in the Caribbean Sea on October 21, marking the latest storm in the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season. As of now, forecasters say no other areas in the Atlantic basin show signs of potential tropical development.

Melissa is expected to continue moving through the Caribbean over the next several days, though its exact track and potential impacts are still being monitored by the National Hurricane Center (NHC). The system developed from a tropical disturbance that strengthened as it encountered warm ocean waters and favorable atmospheric conditions.

While the number of hurricanes typically declines in October as the season winds down, forecasters caution that intense storms can still form late in the year. Past late-season hurricanes have occasionally brought significant impacts to parts of the Caribbean and the U.S. Gulf Coast.

The Atlantic hurricane season officially runs from June 1 through November 30. The next name on this year’s list is Nestor.
