Sarasota County commissioners are weighing new boating restrictions for waters off Ted Sperling Park at South Lido Beach due to safety and environmental concerns.

County staff presented two options at this week’s commission meeting. Option A would ban motorized boats within 300 feet of the shoreline, except for law enforcement, emergency, or government vessels. Option B would allow boats in the area only at idle speed for loading or unloading near the sand.

The proposal aims to reduce risky watercraft activity near swimmers and protect seagrass habitat. The initiative gained momentum after a June jet ski crash killed a 19-year-old minor league baseball player near Lido Key.

Some commissioners expressed concern about restricting access for families who use the area for recreation. “Because we have bad actors, good families who enjoy their day at the beach are going to be penalized,” one commissioner said. Others questioned how the rules would be enforced given multiple agencies have jurisdiction in Sarasota Bay.

If approved, the ordinance would take effect January 1, 2026, following state and federal permitting. A public hearing is expected in November. County staff would also coordinate with the city of Sarasota and law enforcement on signage and communication.
