Florida legislators are considering a bill that would allow exemptions to the state’s minimum wage law, which increased to $14 per hour in September.
The proposed legislation, introduced by Republican Representative Ryan Chamberlin of Marion County, would permit individuals to voluntarily request lower pay for internships or similar positions.
Supporters say the bill would create opportunities for people to gain work experience that might not be available at the current minimum wage. Critics warn the legislation could enable employers to reclassify entry-level jobs as internships to avoid paying the minimum wage.
Chamberlin sponsored similar legislation earlier this year. While the measure advanced in both chambers, it did not receive a floor vote.
